Chapter 20: The Roof

The roof over the bakery was warm.

The ovens ran under it from three in the morning, and the heat came up through the tar paper into my bare feet.

I had spread two wool blankets and a canvas tarp against the brick chimney.

I stood at the edge of them in my coat and nothing else.

Providence lay dark below the roofline, with the river a black stripe and the hurricane barrier lit orange at the far end.

The smell of baking bread poured up from the vent beside us.

Riccardo came up the fire ladder in his work clothes, with a thermos in one hand, and stopped at the top.

"Rebelo."

"You're late," I said.

"It's four in the morning."

His eyes moved over my coat and down my legs, and he put the thermos down very carefully.

"Is that all you're wearing?"

"Come here and find out."

He came across the roof in four long steps.

He took my face and kissed me, and I pulled his shirt out of his jeans and got my hands under it.

His skin was cold from the night and his mouth was hot.

I pushed his jacket off, and his shirt.

I unbuckled his belt with fingers that had no patience at all.

He kicked off his boots and his jeans on the warm tar and stood naked under the stars with the wind on his skin.

I put my palms on his chest and walked him backward until his shoulders met the chimney bricks.

He hissed at the warmth of them.

I closed my hand around his cock and stroked him once, slowly.

"Out here?" he said, half laughing, half groaning.

"Out here."

"Anyone could see," he said.

"Only the gulls."

I kissed his throat and bit it.

His hips pushed into my fist, and I let go.

"Not yet," I said. "On the blanket."

I shrugged the coat off my shoulders and let it fall.

The warm air from the vent moved over my skin, and the cold air of May moved over the rest.

"God," he said.

"Down."

He did not wait to be told twice.
