Chapter 20: Guns

"Grandma, where are you right now?"

"In the kitchen," she said. "With the lights off. I'm not a fool."

Another bang on the front door, and Spence's voice, slurred and loud.

"Carolyn! Open up! This is my house!"

Bennet was already out of bed and dressed.

He had his phone to his ear and he was saying three words at a time to someone, very quietly.

"Mill Road. Now. Nobody goes in."

"Stay in the kitchen," I told my grandmother. "Stay on the phone. We're coming."

"I made coffee," she said. "In case."

The sky was still black when we turned onto Mill Road.

There were two dark SUVs parked on the shoulder a hundred yards from the house with their lights off.

Bennet's head of security walked up to our window before the car had stopped.

"He's on the porch, sir. Deer rifle. Bolt action, I think it's one of ours. He's put two rounds into the barn already."

"Is she still in the kitchen?"

"Yes, sir. He doesn't know the back door's unlocked."

"Then nobody moves on him," Bennet said. "Not one of you."

"He's drunk and he's scared. If six men come out of the dark at him, he shoots somebody."

Bennet got out of the car.

I got out the other side.

"Alana."

"I know the back door," I said. "I know which stair creaks. You don't."
