Chapter 9: Shares
Spence came down off the stage still smiling, but he came straight to our table.
He put one hand on the back of Bennet's chair and leaned in.
"Something funny, Buddy?"
"Not at all," Bennet said. "I just wanted to be sure I understood. You own Ironvale?"
The tables around us went quiet to listen.
Spence laughed easily.
"I don't discuss that. Security reasons. You wouldn't understand."
"No," Bennet said. "I'm sure I wouldn't."
"Men in my position don't get to have their faces in the paper."
"That must be hard."
"You have no idea." Spence clapped him on the shoulder. "Enjoy the open bar. It's on me."
He walked away.
Bennet picked up a shrimp off my plate and ate it.
My grandmother was looking at him very hard.
"What's going on with you two?" she whispered to me.
"Later, Grandma."
At the head table a waiter was clearing a space.
Deena set down a leather folder.
Spence set down a gold frame.
Inside the frame was a cream-colored certificate with a gold seal and an eagle and the Ironvale name in big curly letters.
"Five hundred shares," Deena announced to the room, holding it up. "Ironvale Defense. Pre-public. Spence says in two years it's worth more than every house on Mill Road put together."
People craned their necks.
A man at the next table whistled.
"And all I'm giving up is a drafty old farmhouse," Deena said, laughing. "Mother's too old for those stairs anyway."
My grandmother's hand went cold on mine.
A woman in a navy suit sat down at the head table with a stamp and a pen.
