Chapter 18: A Night to Decide
I told him in the dark, because it is easier to say a cruel thing without a face to watch.
We lay in his bed with the shutters open and the summer air moving the curtains.
He was on his back, and I lay on his chest with my ear against his heart.
"If the old Rosamund wants her life back, it's hers," I said.
"She was there first. She was a coward, but she was twenty-four and she did not want to die."
"And I might have to go."
His heart did not change its beat, but his hand stopped moving in my hair.
"No," Hadrian said.
"Hadrian."
"No. I have read that book three times today. I have read it with a pen in my hand."
"There is a line in it for every possible way, and I have found the one where you stay."
"There isn't one."
"Then I will make one," he said.
"And if it comes to the hour, and she is on the boards and you are beside her and the hangman asks for my signature."
His voice dropped, low and level.
"I will hang myself before I let you be sent."
