Chapter 21: The Joliet Report
The County Board chamber seated seventeen commissioners at a horseshoe of oak.
On Thursday a coat-check rack for rifles stood in the corridor again, with tickets.
The gallery held four hundred people, and the overflow stood on the stairs and watched on a monitor.
Honore Street sat on the left, the Table on the right, and the Rangers' captains at the back in flannel, one chair empty among them.
My mother sat in the front row with her thermos, and Reiss sat beside her with his stamp left at the office on purpose.
I sat at the witness table, and I had not slept.
Dr. Pashek went to the lectern at 10:20.
The Board President nodded at him as she would at a man who had asked to give blood.
He laid the yellow envelope in front of him and slit it with a county letter opener.
His hands were not steady, and the handkerchief was in his left one.
"Madam President, members," he said. "I am the Chief Medical Examiner of this county, and I have never read what I am about to read."
Inside were six typed pages and a folded note.
