Chapter 27: The Thumb Ring

Felix's POV

I walked to the Bureau's gate alone at seven with a phone in my breast pocket and the call to Hal already open.

I had not asked her permission, and she had not asked me to explain.

She stood at the crossing behind me, a quarter mile of cold and ash, and I could feel her listening.

The Director sat in the rear seat of a black SUV with the window down and a paper cup in her hand.

She wore her cardigan, and her silver bob was perfect, and she looked up at me kindly.

"Inspector," she said. "Thank you for coming without your lawyer."

"I'm the Inspector of record on the hold," I said.

"I'm cutting a ring off a fold in your hall at nine under the court's order."

"I know. That is why I wanted seven."

"You were in my hall on Veterans Day," she added. "You stamped the exit sheet yourself, Inspector."

"The ring on 42,016 matched the photograph in your mother's Rockford report," she said.

"I put it on my own rack so that you would find it with me and not alone."

"I don't know what it means. I thought you should have the file before you cut it."

She held up a manila folder, not thick, with a Rockford sheriff's tab on the edge.

"Your sister's file, Mr. Reiss. All of it, from the night she vanished."
