Chapter 13: Rabbit, Alpha

Ashgrove sent two envoys to Stonecrest on day fifteen, to see for themselves before the Moot.

They were an older man with a gray braid and a woman who never smiled.

Ronan sat them at the long table, across from Cedric and me.

Cedric had steak on his plate, the first he'd had in front of strangers.

The older envoy looked at him for a long moment.

"Last winter you filled a room, Muldoon," he said. "Tonight you look like a coat on a hook."

Cedric put his fork down.

"My wolf has been ill," he said.

"Ill." The woman finally spoke. "Word along the river is that he's gone."

Sixty wolves stopped eating.

Cedric's hand lay on the table beside his plate.

I watched it begin to shake.

I did not think.

I reached over and laid my palm on the back of his hand.

The shaking stopped.

The lamp over the table flickered, and then every bulb in the hall went white.

Cedric's head came up.

His eyes were gold from rim to rim, and a low sound rolled out of his chest that I felt in my own ribs.

Spoons hummed against the bowls.

The older envoy slid his chair back a full foot.

"Ash," Cedric said, in the voice with another voice under it. "My wolf is not gone. My wolf is here."

Nobody laughed.

Ronan leaned back and picked up his beer, and he looked at the Ashgrove woman with great satisfaction.

"You were saying?" he said.

She was looking at my hand.

Then she looked at my face, and she did the arithmetic, and I saw her do it.

"Luna Bradford," she said slowly. "Is it true you eat three helpings?"

"At least three," I said.

"Good," she said, and picked up her own fork.

The hall breathed again.

I should have taken my hand back.

Instead I leaned in until my mouth was beside Cedric's ear, and I said it low, but not low enough for Ronan, who was at the head of the table and had very good hearing.

"When this supper is over, I'm taking you to my cabin. I'm going to sit on the edge of my bed, and you're going to put your mouth between my legs, and you're not going to stop until I tell you to."
