Chapter 16: Terms

Eun-ho lasted until midnight.

He spent the day in his flat with the curtains shut while his phone buzzed itself across the table.

Ji-yu answered the door to the press with a broom.

By nine he had stopped being angry.

By eleven he had stopped being afraid.

By midnight he knew what he wanted, and he put on his grey suit and his good shoes and took a cab to the tower.

The doorman looked at him and said nothing.

Eun-ho used the code.

The penthouse was dark, except for one lamp.

Si-wan was sitting on the bedroom floor with his back against the bed, in his shirtsleeves, with a glass of water he hadn't touched.

On the carpet in front of him lay the four torn pieces of Eun-ho's resignation letter, lined up.

Si-wan looked up.

He didn't speak.

Eun-ho stood in the doorway.

"I'm going to say my terms," Eun-ho said. "You'll listen to all of them."

"Yes."

"One. You never decide for me again. Not a policy, not a lawyer, not a shop in Seongnam."

"If you think I'm in danger, you tell me, and I choose."

"Yes."

"Two. On Sunday morning I walk out of this building as myself, in front of whoever is outside, and you don't stop me."

Si-wan's jaw moved.

"Yes."

"Three."

Eun-ho crossed the room.

He took off his jacket and laid it on the chair.

"Tonight, I decide everything."
