Chapter 7: The Uncle at the Door

The knot went down just in time.

Si-wan eased out of Eun-ho with a hiss, and Eun-ho felt the emptiness and the wet run down his legs.

He wanted to cry from the loss of him.

Si-wan pulled him up by the elbow and wrapped a towel around his waist.

"Bedroom. Close the door. Don't breathe loud."

"Si-wan..."

"My uncle can smell a lie through a wall. Go."

Eun-ho went.

He ran across the marble, dripping, slid into the bedroom and shut the door to a crack.

Then he stood behind it with his heart going.

He heard the shower cut off.

He heard Si-wan's bare feet cross the hall.

The chain rattled.

"Uncle," Si-wan said.

He sounded bored, which was impressive.

"Si-wan."

There was a pause.

"You smell like a stable."

"I'm in rut. It's Tuesday. I'd have thought you'd know better than to come to a man's home."

"I have a key."

"You have a key you were never meant to use."

Through the gap in the door Eun-ho could see only a slice of the hall: the black lacquer, Si-wan's bare back in a robe, the edge of a grey suit sleeve on the other side of the chain.

Ha Jung-gook.

The Vice Chairman of Haeryung was sixty-one, soft-spoken, with round glasses and a gold pen he turned in his fingers when he lied.

He was turning it now.

Eun-ho could hear the click.

"The Daon chairman came to see me at three this morning," the uncle said. "She was in a state."
