Chapter 6: Thirteen or Older
I was out of the truck before Gunnar had it in park.
"Get off the porch," I said.
The taller man smiled at me. He had a shaved head and a Silver Ridge wolf's head tattooed on his neck.
"Morning, ma'am. We're here for five pups. Council order."
He held up the paper.
Behind him, through the door, I could see the twins on the stairs in their pajamas, and the little one under the kitchen table.
Fern hadn't moved out of the doorway.
"I told them nobody's home," she said. "They said they'd wait."
Gunnar came up the steps behind me with Glory asleep on his back.
The tall man looked at him and grinned wider.
"The gelding. Heard about you."
Gunnar set Glory down on the porch swing and stood up straight.
He didn't say anything.
"Give me that," I said.
The man held the paper out of reach.
"You can't read a council order. You're a Pup House girl."
"I've run the Pup House for six years. I've read every foster order this pack has signed since I was twenty. Give it to me or read it to me."
He shrugged and handed it over.
It was Colt's handwriting at the bottom. Colt's signature. The blue council seal.
I read it out loud, slowly, so Fern could hear and the kids could hear.
"By order of the Alpha of Blackfork. The blood-foster claim made by Gunnar Brennick at the Harvest Moon is set aside. The Pup House pups, five, are placed with the Silver Ridge pack as one household, effective on delivery."
"There," said the tall man. "Effective on delivery. Bring them out."
I turned the paper over.
Every Blackfork foster form has the foster law printed on the back in tiny type. Nobody reads it.
