Chapter 14: The Price of the Strip

Kurt's POV

I read Torin's letter standing in my office with the door locked, and I read it twice.

It was two pages in a hand that pressed hard enough to dent the paper.

He wrote that he would sign over the river strip, the mile of ford and bank that Harrow Ridge and Cinder Creek had been bleeding over for eleven years.

All of it, free and clear, with the old treaty rights thrown in.

In return Fern would come back as Luna "to heal the pack," and I would withdraw my protection from her.

He had put a price on her.

It was a very good price, and he must have thought I would take it.

I sat down on the edge of the desk and let the anger come up slowly, because it was the cold kind and I did not trust it fast.

I could have answered it with a single no.

I did not answer, because of what I had been turning over since the bridge.

Her hands hadn't shaken, and her feet hadn't taken one step toward him.

I should have been glad, and for about a minute I was.

Then I remembered the porch, and her feet moving toward the road before she knew it.

That was a bond answering.

I told myself a cut bond fades, and that was true, and I couldn't stop turning it over anyway.

A woman who had been pulled by an order that way could be pulled again.

She might not even know it.

And she had told me in the truck what she thought of me, and she was right.

I had stood at a window once and done nothing for her.
