Chapter 17: The Raid
I got to the window in time to see Wyatt go off the back porch.
He was a man on the top step and a wolf when he hit the snow.
He went down the slope toward the river so fast he left a spray of white behind him.
The healer came in in her nightgown and boots and sat on the end of my bed with a fire poker across her knees.
"Stay away from the glass," she said.
We waited.
The howls moved down along the bank, then upstream, then stopped.
At a quarter to four, Wyatt came back in his skin with a blanket around his waist and snow in his hair.
"Three of them," he said. "They came up out of the water below the boathouse. They heard the patrol and went back in."
"What did they want?"
He didn't answer.
He walked me out the back door in my socks and pointed his flashlight at the snow.
Wolf tracks.
Big ones, three sets, coming up from the river in a straight line.
They stopped right under my window.
Then they turned and ran.
After that I slept in the room off the healer's kitchen, with no outside wall.
