"Not yours?" Lacey said.
Her voice wasn't soft.
It wasn't the voice she used for the hall, or for me, or for our father.
It was the voice I'd heard through the kitchen window in September.
Garrett turned and looked at her at last.
"Sit down, Lacey."
"You sit down."
She swiped at the screen with her thumb.
"April the fourth," she read out. "Two thousand twenty-six. Eleven at night. From Garrett."
She looked up at the ring.
"Keep giving her the tea till yours takes. I'll see to the old man."
Nobody made a sound.
Across the stone, I saw my mother put her hand over her mouth.
"April the twelfth," Lacey read. "Don't let her skip a morning. Not one."
"That's enough," Garrett's mother said.
"May. She asked me again tonight why nothing's happening. Tell her it's stress. Tell her to drink two cups."
Two cups.
I remembered that.
I remembered Lacey at my counter in May, smiling, filling the kettle twice.
"For my big sister. Double today. You look so tired."
Garrett took a step toward her.
"Give me that."
