Chapter 4: The Moon Stone

I didn't let Lacey see me walk faster.

I put the box in the truck bed and climbed in and drove to the motel by the highway in Larch Falls.

The clerk gave me the room at the end, by the ice machine.

I put the green tin in the bottom of my duffel bag, under my scrubs.

Then I lay on the bedspread in my feast dress and stared at the water stain on the ceiling until it was time.

At nine that night I drove back up the ridge road.

The whole pack was already there.

They stood in a ring around the Moon Stone, a flat slab of granite at the top of the ridge with the river shining far below it.

Torches were stuck in the ground around it.

Two years ago those torches had been wound with ribbon.

Two years ago my father had walked me up this same path with his arm through mine, telling me to stand up straight.

Tonight he stood at Garrett's right hand, where the Beta always stood.

Lacey stood at Garrett's left.

She was wearing white.

My mother stood behind my father, half hidden by his shoulder.

The ring of wolves opened for me without anyone saying anything.

I walked into the middle and stopped across the stone from Garrett.

The moon was a day past full and huge over the trees.

"Brynn Corwin," Garrett said.

His voice carried. He had always known how to make it carry.

"You've been Luna of Redmoor for two years. In that time you've given this pack no heir, and you've lied to your Alpha in front of the pack."

"I haven't lied."

"You'll speak when the rite lets you."

He put his hand on the stone.
