Chapter 12: The Moon Thread

Rhiannon's POV

The Moon Stone stood on the highest ridge of Hollowmere, a grey slab taller than a man.

The Hunter's Moon came up behind it, huge and orange.

The whole pack had climbed the hill. Two hundred wolves stood in a half circle on the frozen grass.

Hester stood at the back with Poppy asleep on her shoulder.

I had kissed my daughter's forehead before I left the house.

The Stone-keeper waited beside the slab with her walking stick planted in the dirt.

Corbin stood on my left.

Alpha Whitcombe stood on the far side, and his daughter beside him wore a grey coat and a gentle face.

Seven nights had passed. Corbin hadn't touched me since the study, and I had not asked him to.

"Both of you place your right palm on the Stone," the Stone-keeper said. "Speak your words, one at a time. The Stone will take what is true and leave what is not."

"Before I do," Corbin said hoarsely, "I need to tell her something."

"You have had seven nights," the Stone-keeper said.

"I know."

"And you have not."

His jaw moved. He looked at me, and I saw how afraid he was.

"Corbin?" I said.

"Rhiannon, please. Let me say it myself."

"Say what?"

"I don't think you will," the Stone-keeper said, not unkindly.

"So I will. The Stone is not going to let this be sealed in the dark."

She turned to face the two hundred wolves.

"Luna Roarke," she said, "put your hand on the Stone."

I stepped forward and laid my palm against the cold rock.

Light ran up from my hand, silver and thin, and I felt a pull in my chest, in a place I had never known was there.
