Chapter 5: The Luna's Chair

The breakfast table at Hollowmere seated thirty, and in four years nobody had ever pulled out a chair for me at it.

I walked into the dining hall at eight and every head turned.

Corbin sat at the head of the table. Alpha Whitcombe sat at his right hand with a napkin tucked into his collar.

Sabine sat beside her father, and next to her sat a small boy in a grey scarf, swinging his feet.

The chair at Corbin's left was empty.

It had been empty for as long as I'd lived in that house. The pack called it "the Luna's chair" and nobody sat in it.

"Dr. Roarke," Alpha Whitcombe said, without standing. "I'd hoped we could settle this over tea."

"Settle what?"

"Your title." He smiled. "A Luna who leaves her Alpha and takes a new name forfeits the chair. It's pack custom. I'd like you to say so, in front of witnesses, and let Sabine take her place."

Sabine's hand went to her throat. "Father, please. It's too early for this."

"It's never too early to be clear."

The boy stopped swinging his feet and looked at me with great interest.

"Are you the lady who made Papa fall down?" he asked.

The room went silent.

Sabine closed her eyes. "Sweetheart, we talked about this."

Corbin didn't look at the child. He was looking at me.

I understood then that the boy called him Papa, and that nobody at that table was surprised.

My stomach turned over once. I let it.
