Chapter 6: What Corbin Knew

Corbin's POV

From my study window I could see the kitchen garden, and in the kitchen garden Rhiannon was laughing.

She sat on an upturned crate with the old cook on one side and two omegas on the other, shelling peas into a bowl.

One of the omegas said something and Rhiannon put her head back and laughed with her whole throat.

I had been mated to that woman for four years, and I had never once made her do that.

I stood with my hand on the glass until the beta knocked.

"Alpha."

"Come in."

He shut the door behind him. His beard had gone greyer this year.

"Three council members have asked for a shift at the Hunter's Moon," he said. "They want to see you take your wolf in front of the pack. Whitcombe's people are counting votes."

"They'll see it."

"Will they?"

"I ran the ridge this morning."

"I know. I saw you." The beta didn't look away. "So did everyone on the north wall."

"Then they all know what changed."

I knew what had changed.

There was a reason I had stood outside her door every morning for four years.

I did not let myself think the whole of it, not with the beta standing in front of me.

"Say it," I said.

"She's been in the house one night, and you've got your wolf back. They'll want to know why."

"Then they'll want to know."

"And what do I tell them?"

"That she's my Luna," I said, "until the Stone says she isn't."
