Chapter 10: What the Stone Said

I sat up in his bed with the sheet held to my chest and the stipend order in my other hand.

I had gotten across the room without feeling my legs.

"Your signature," I said.

Hollis lay with one arm behind his head and his eyes still soft.

Then he saw the page, and the softness went out of his face.

"Linnea."

"You paid them." My voice shook, and I hated that. "Four years of it, every month, and you signed every one."

"I did."

"You knew they were my parents, and you knew what I was." I stood up with the sheet around me. "I scrubbed engine blocks while you wrote them checks for the S-Rank in the family."

"I paid them for Sabine."

"You never checked."

"I never checked," he said, and he sat up. "The instrument had never been wrong. I signed a stack of forty orders a week and I trusted the number."

"That's not good enough."

"No."

"They spent my grandmother's money. They kept the Crown's money. And you handed it over without looking, and then you came to my gate and told me not to touch you."

"Yes." He didn't flinch. "I broke that rule tonight, and I'd break it again. I won't ask you to forgive the stipend. I'm asking to show you something first."

"Why did you kiss me?" I said. "Because you want a weapon? Because I'm S-Rank and you like them tamed?"

He stood up, bare, and walked to me, and I did not step back.

"I wanted you before I knew your rank," he said. "I wanted you when you stood in a gravel yard in a ruined dress with a wrench in your fist, and I wanted you before the wolf came."
