Chapter 15: Hollis's POV

Hollis's POV

I heard the trucks before I saw them.

I was on the east wall with my sleeve pushed up, and the mark on my wrist had been burning since Sabine Brask started to cry.

I had heard every word at the gate.

I had heard Linnea say I won't, and I had never been so proud of anyone in my life.

Now ten sets of headlights came over the rise, and my hands went cold.

Eight men, the girl had said.

Eight men sent to carry a young woman out of a building because an order said she belonged to them.

I knew exactly how that felt from the inside.

I jumped down off the wall and landed in the courtyard beside her.

"Take Sabine to the guardroom," I told Teague, who had appeared at my shoulder with his coat half on.

"Done."

"Linnea, go with them."

"No."

"They're coming for you."

"They're coming into your Keep," she said, "to take your recruit from under the Crown's roof. I'm not hiding in a guardroom while you fight my father's men."

"Linnea."

"I'm not asking, Commander."

I looked at her, with her jaw set and her wrench-scarred hands loose at her sides, and I knew it was useless.

"Then stay behind me," I said. "Let me stand in front of you once."

She didn't answer, but she moved behind my left shoulder.

The lead truck hit the Keep's lower gate at speed and buckled the steel.

The gate sagged, and the second truck drove straight through it.

Men poured out of the trucks into the courtyard, eight, nine, ten, in Brask grey, with leather straps in their hands.

Straps. They had brought straps.

Osric Brask climbed down last, in his Alpha coat, with his hands in his pockets.

"Commander Garrow," he said. "This is a family matter."

"This is Crown property, Alpha. You're standing on it."
