Forty Silvermoor wolves growled at once.
The sound rolled across the river.
Bowen didn't step back.
Lucan started toward him.
I put my hand on his arm.
"Let me."
He looked down at me.
He nodded once and stopped where he was.
I walked to the stone marker.
The wolves on both sides went quiet.
I knew half the Ironwood faces. Warriors I'd cooked for. Mothers I'd sat with at pup birthdays. The old wolf who used to bring me eggs.
Some of them looked at the ground.
"You're on my land, Bowen."
"I want to see my son."
"You don't have a son."
"I know what the healer's old witch said. I know what Rhys said. I know what that Alpha of yours said."
He was shaking.
"But I smelled him on you, Elodie. I know my own blood."
"You smelled a pup on me," I said. "You didn't smell yours. You smelled Lucan's."
