Chapter 23: The Wedding
Verna said the Bay did not marry on a Friday or a holiday.
So we married on the first Saturday of the new year, at slack tide, on the Beal wharf.
I wore my mother's dress.
It was cream wool with a high collar, and Verna had spent two weeks of evenings taking it in at the waist.
She pinned the last seam herself that morning, with her knotted hands steady, and scowled to hide that her eyes were wet.
The whole fleet lay out in the harbor with their lights lit in the gray morning, every boat dressed from bow to masthead.
The wharf was packed from the road to the float.
The Chair of the Landing had come down from the Penobscot in a borrowed truck.
She stood beside the Counter's card table in a black hat, with the Book in her arms.
Armand's mother stood in the front row in a navy coat, with her hands folded and her chin up.
And down the planks from the road came the Hall.
They came on foot, forty strong, in a line, each one carrying a wooden crate in his arms.
The Hall's Beta walked at the head of them.
Behind the last of the line, with a crate on his shoulder and another in his arms, came Dwight Thurston.
His face was red with the load, and he did not look up.
"The Colors Wall," said the Beta. "Every buoy that has hung on it since 1913."
"The Hall brings it to the Bay's rail, as the elders swore."
"Put it where I can see it," I said.
They set the crates down along the rail.
Dwight opened his, and took out a buoy, and hung it on the wharf rail with his own hands.
He hung the next one, and the next.
