Chapter 7: Pot Warp
Armand's POV
She tied my wrists to the leg of the bait table with her father's pot warp.
She used a knot that would hold under load.
"Pull," Mercy said.
I pulled.
The knot held.
I was lying on my back on a pile of burlap sacks in the bait shed.
Herring barrels stood along the wall, and one bare bulb swung over us.
I could have torn that table out of the floor.
I did not, and she knew I wouldn't, and that was most of what was happening in that room.
"Good," she said. "Now stay."
She stood over me in the lamplight with the rope's end in her fist.
The smell of the warp hit me, tar and salt, and for a moment I wasn't there.
I was at the Vanceboro trestle at gray dawn, with a coil of that same rope over my shoulder.
The Hall's wolves were already on the ice when I came down the bank.
There were forty of them, standing in the cold.
Josiah Thurston was washing his arms in the river up to the elbows, with his sleeves dripping.
Amos Beal lay under a tarp with his hands crossed.
Eben lay beside him with his mouth open and one eyetooth gone.
"The Alpha's dead on the ice by my teeth, Michaud," Josiah had said.
He dried his hands on his coat.
"The Beals held the east bank. They held it well."
I had believed him.
I tied the two Beals to spruce poles and carried them home myself.
Later I read the Hall's account into the Book at Machias, with my hand on the page.
I read it a second time at the Hall's request.
"Armand."
Mercy was kneeling over my chest with her hand flat on my jaw.
"Where did you go?"
"Nowhere," I said. "I'm here."
"You'd better be."
She smiled at me, slow, and the trestle fell away.
She unbuttoned my shirt one button at a time and pushed it open.
She undid my belt and my jeans and drew them down my legs.
I lifted my hips to help.
"Did I say you could help?" she said.
"No."
"Then lie still."
I lay still.
She sat back on her heels between my knees and looked at me, naked and tied.
I felt that look on my skin, all of it.
I was hard and aching.
I could not hide it, and I did not try.
"Look at you," she said softly. "All that, and it's for me."
