"Mom," I said.
I pulled the quilt higher.
My whole body was sore and hot and strange, and the room smelled of three days of us.
My mother came down the last stairs and sat on the end of the bed.
She was forty-nine years old, with short graying hair and laugh lines and a school-bus company fleece over her church dress, and she had not once in my life looked at me the way she did now.
She looked ashamed, and she looked proud, and she looked afraid.
"Don't," I said.
"I'm not going to ask," she said.
"You're twenty-four.
"It's heat, and I've had mine."
"Mom."
"And that boy stood at the top of those stairs the first night and wouldn't let anyone down, not even his father.
"I think that tells me what I need to know."
Heat came up my neck.
"He's not a boy," I said.
"He's thirty."
"He's an idiot," my mother said.
"But he's a loyal one."
I almost laughed.
My throat hurt.
"Where is he?" I said.
