Chapter 11: Short Weights
I found it on Wednesday night, in my own ticket books.
I had been through every stub since the first of August three times, with a pencil and my father's old calculator.
I found nothing wrong at Ridley Siding.
Every weight was true, and I would have known.
It was the other end I hadn't checked.
When a truck left my bed with a ticket, it went on to the Dunmore co-op or to the grain buyer in Havre.
The buyer's receiving weight went on the back of my copy.
I had never looked at the backs.
I turned over a stub.
*Receiving weight, Havre.* Forty pounds light.
I turned another.
Forty light.
I did the whole stack under the weak lamp in the scale house with the heater ticking.
By midnight I had thirty-one trucks, all from the Dunmore pack's own fleet, and every one was forty pounds short on arrival.
My scale had read true.
Somewhere between my bed and Havre, forty pounds a load was vanishing on paper.
Somebody was selling the buyer the full load and signing for the lighter one, and the difference went into a pocket.
