Chapter 7: The Hay Loft

The last page of the ledger was ruled in columns, in pencil, in a round careful hand.

Date.

Amount.

*Paid on the note.*

Down the page ran a list of dates from July on, and every figure beside them was in my mother's handwriting.

The first one said eleven hundred dollars.

The next said fourteen hundred.

They were small and steady, a bus driver's money, paid on the first and the fifteenth.

I had thought the pension account was a bribe.

It was a payment.

"On what note?" I said.

Dagny rocked with her eyes shut.

"On this house," she said.

"It's an old note.

"Your mother has been helping with it.

"I'd ask her the rest."

"Why doesn't Soren know?" I said.

"Because he doesn't ask the right person," Dagny said.

She opened one blue eye.

"And because I'm eighty-four, and I enjoy it."

"That's not fair to him," I said.

"No," Dagny said.

"Nor was it fair of him to lock my pantry.

"Go home, girl."

I went.

I got as far as the yard with my mother's handwriting swimming in front of my eyes.

Then I turned the truck around and drove up to the Ness barn instead.

I told myself I was going to look at the weigh shed whose key I had thrown at his feet.

I parked in the rain.
