Chapter 9: Ask Me Loud

Kari's POV

Kjell Sundby's boots went away up the stairs.

I stood against the stone with my hand still wrapped around Soren and my heat roaring in my ears.

I did not care what Kjell had said.

I cared that the room was shrinking.

"He's lying," Soren said, low and rough.

"I know he is," I said.

"I'll deal with it."

"After," I said.

"After what?" he said.

"After this."

I let go of him and stepped back.

The fire came up in me then, all at once, as if it had waited for Kjell to leave.

It rolled through my belly and down my thighs, and I gripped the edge of the bed and gasped.

I was soaked already.

My skin hurt.

Every place the air touched me ached to be touched.

"Soren," I said.

He hadn't moved.

He stood against the wall with his jeans open and his hands flat on the stone, because I had told him to.

His pupils were so wide they swallowed the gray.

"You said I'd have to ask," I said.

"I did," he said.

"I'm asking," I said.

"Kari," he said.

"I'm asking," I said, and my voice broke.

"Please.

"I'm asking you to touch me."

His breath left him.

He came off the wall in one move.

He had me up against the stone before I could breathe, his mouth on mine and his hands in my hair, hard and desperate.
