Chapter 7: Tobias Comes Over the River

Tobias Wynn came across the Miller River on foot, with his hands out where the sentries could see them.

It was a week after the border, and I was on the trading post porch hand-stitching a halter when the youngest sentry came up the path and said, "There's a Redwood wolf asking for you. He says it isn't about his Alpha."

"Is it?" I asked.

"He says it is a little."

Tobias stood at the bottom of the steps with his freckled face scrubbed raw and his pack jacket zipped to his chin.

He looked like he hadn't slept in a week either.

"Luna," he said.

"Anneliese."

"Anneliese." He nodded. "Thank you for seeing me."

"Sit," I said. "You're making the steps nervous."

He sat on the bottom step, and I handed him a mug of tea, and he held it in both hands.

Ewan was leaning on the post at the far end of the porch, doing a very bad job of fixing a fence latch.

"I'll be here," he said, to nobody.

"You're always here," I told him.

"It's a big porch."

Tobias almost laughed, and then the laugh turned into something else, and he put the mug down on the step.

"He can't shift," he said.

I kept my eyes on my stitching.

"It's been ten days. I've seen him try. He goes out behind the house at dawn and stands there until he's bleeding from the nose." He pulled at his zipper. "The Alpha voice is gone. Half the wolves don't answer him anymore. They look at me instead, and I'm just the Beta."

"I'm sorry for the pack," I said.

"The Black Pine Alpha sent a letter yesterday. Formal. He wants the river road and the north timber, and he says Redwood's Alpha has gone soft." Tobias rubbed his forehead. "They're going to come at the Gala, in front of everyone. You know what happens if he can't fight."
