"No," I said.
It came out before I had run it once.
Nils stood in the lane with the half-loaf in his hand and waited for the rest of the sentence.
There wasn't one.
"That's it?" he said. "Loaf, I said I made a mistake."
"I heard you," I said.
"You don't even want to hear why?"
"I know why. You wanted to be an Alpha who chose, and now you see he's lonely."
"That's not what I..." He stopped. "That is a little what I meant."
I put the bag strap over my shoulder.
My hands were shaking, so I put them in my apron pockets, where there were two wooden spoons and a pencil.
"When I was nineteen, I came to the bakehouse door the day the bond came in," I said.
"You were standing in the flour room with a clipboard."
"I remember the clipboard," Nils said.
"You looked at me and said you'd have picked someone who needed less preparation."
Nils's face went blank.
"I didn't say that," he said.
"You did. I've had it for eight years."
"Aino, I was nineteen too. I was scared of the bond."
