Chapter 12: The Green Door

I sat up in his bed and pulled the sheet to my chin.

He sat on the edge with his back to me, and his shoulders were shaking.

"Say it," he said. "Whatever it is. Say it now."

"I didn't leave years ago."

He did not move.

"I was in the lower row on the night of the fire," I said. "East row. The third house from the creek."

The room was so quiet that I heard the clock in the hall.

"The door of my house was green," I said.

His hands closed on his knees.

"Stop," he said.

He made a sound that was not a word.

"I knew who you were from the first breath."

"You knew."

"Yes."

"And you came here."

"I wanted you in front of the Moot," I said. "I wanted you to say their names out loud, to the Alphas, to the elders, to everyone. I thought if I stood next to you long enough, I would find the proof."

"You didn't need proof," he said. "I would have said it."

"I know that now."

"You could have killed me in my sleep."

"I thought about it," I said. "More than once."

He nodded slowly.

"Why didn't you?"

"Because it would have made you a martyr. And because..."

I stopped.

I had been about to say, because I couldn't.

He lifted his eyes to mine, and I could see him working it out.
