Chapter 4: You Picked the Wrong She-Wolf

Poppy stood on the third step with her face turned up to mine.

She was close enough that I could smell her perfume, something pale and sweet.

"Here," she said, and held out the papers. "Look at his signature."

I did not take them.

"Read me the date," I said.

"It's right there."

"I can't see it from here. Read it to me, so the people watching can hear."

Her smile flickered.

Then her eyes moved, very slightly, to the edge of the step behind her.

I saw it before she did it.

My son said, "Now, Mom. She's going to do it now."

Poppy let go of the papers.

She flung both arms out to the sides, and she threw herself backward off the stairs.

"Joanna, no!" she screamed. "Please, don't push me!"

I had not moved.

Her body hit the third step, then the second, and then the polished floor with a flat, ugly sound.

The papers floated down after her.

The hall went silent.

I stood on my step with my right hand on the banister and my phone in my left, exactly where I had been.

On the floor, Poppy curled on her side. She wrapped both arms around her stomach and began to sob.

"My baby," she cried. "She pushed me. She tried to kill me, I'm hurt, somebody help me."

I looked at the phone in my hand.

Fifteen thousand people were watching.

The comments were moving too fast to follow, but I caught a few.

She threw herself.

The Luna never touched her.

Did she say baby???
