Chapter 11: Soup for Mom

Kendra was sitting in the clinic waiting room the next morning with a casserole dish on her lap.

She wore a soft pink sweater and no makeup, and she had tied her hair back the way she used to when we were twelve.

When she saw me, she stood up with both hands on the dish.

"Bridget," she said. "I'm so glad you're okay."

The receptionist glanced between us.

Nathan came out of the gym doorway, took one look at my face, and stopped beside the counter.

"I'm Kendra," she told him. "Her oldest friend. I made her mom's favorite."

"My mother's favorite is toast," I said.

"Then I made it wrong." She smiled and her eyes watered. "Can we talk? Just for five minutes?"

"We can talk here."

"In private. Please."

Nathan said, quietly, "I'll be at the desk."

He didn't leave.

Kendra led me to the corner of the room, near a rack of pamphlets about posture.

She set the dish on a chair.

"Brett told me the whole thing came out last night," she said. "I wanted you to hear it from me."

"Hear what?"

"I'm sorry." She said it softly. "I never planned to hurt you. The passes started as a joke. Then he liked them, and the boys liked them, and I didn't know how to stop it."
