Chapter 5: Broken Glass

Four hundred people heard Stephanie say it, and nobody breathed.

Dalton came around the head table with both hands out.

"Steph, sit down," he said. "We'll talk about it at home."

"You said she cheated." Stephanie's voice shook, but it did not drop. "You said she left you a month ago and you were too ashamed to tell your father. You said I'd be saving you."

She looked across the whole ballroom at me.

"Is that true?" she asked. "Did she leave?"

"I was at the arch at four o'clock in a wedding dress," I said. "He didn't tell me anything. Ask him what else he told you."

Dalton's father put down his glass and spoke into the microphone with a flat calm.

"Dinner will continue. Please enjoy your evening."

Two men in dark suits started toward me from the side door.

I did not run.

I walked out through the lobby with my chin up, and the men followed, and behind me the room began to talk all at once.

The lobby was long and quiet, with a stone floor and a wall of framed photographs.

Each one showed a Hargrove Homes subdivision from the air, in rows, under glass.

"Ms. Penland."

Dalton's father had come out behind me.

He was a tall man with white hair and a face that had never been asked to explain itself.

"That was a fine performance," he said. "Now I'll tell you how this goes."

"I'm listening."

"The account was joint. Either name could withdraw. Whatever Dalton did with it, he did lawfully, and my lawyers will say so on Monday."
