The first thing Benedikt saw was the window.
It was a narrow hospital window with the blind half up, and beyond it, gray and pale, was a slice of morning sky.
The second thing was a copper head, asleep on the edge of his mattress.
He lay still and breathed.
Everything hurt.
Left side, low, under the ribs, a deep drag that tightened every time he drew breath.
He did not move his hand.
He looked at the hair.
It was messy.
It smelled of sleep, and of him, and of the new sweet note that was not Oren's alone.
He counted.
He had always counted things.
The knife had gone in at an angle.
An inch to the right and it would have taken the kidney.
Two inches, and the doctor would have said something to Ilse in the corridor that she would not have been able to repeat.
A hundred and four Fridays.
Forty-five days since the ball.
A heartbeat he had heard, once, with his ear against a stomach in the dark, that might have been his own.
He had been twenty-five when he put his brother in the ground.
He had thought that was the worst thing a man could count.
