Chapter 23: Marta's Window

St. Brendan's cemetery sat on a hill above the harbor, and on the first clear Sunday of the fall Oren took a bunch of yellow tulips up the path to his mother's grave.

The stone was small and plain.

MARTA SABIN, it said, and two dates.

It did not say what had happened.

Benedikt stood a pace behind him with Ilse and Pip, quiet, a hand resting at the small of Oren's back.

"Hi, Ma," Oren said.

The wind moved in the dry grass.

"I got out." He crouched and set the tulips against the stone. "It took a while. I'm sorry it took so long. I did the math every night, and the math was a lie. It was never mine to pay."

He ran his thumb over the letters.

"They arrested him. The man who did it. He's going to be in a cell for a very long time, and when they read it out, it'll say your name. Your whole name, and what you did." His voice shook. "You took the chart to the detective. You were right."

Behind him, Pip sniffed hard.

"I'm having a baby," Oren said. "I'm okay. I met somebody. He's the quiet kind. You'd like him."

He put his hand on his stomach, over the small, hard curve.
