The baby arrived in the spring, at four in the morning, in the middle of a thunderstorm.
Benedikt held Oren's hand through all of it and did not let go once.
Ilse cried in the hall.
Pip ate a whole box of crackers on the stairs and then fainted, and had to be carried to the sofa by a nurse.
The baby had dark hair and gray eyes, a loud voice, and a faint copper shadow on the top of his head that the nurse swore would fade.
It didn't.
On the second Friday after they brought him home, Oren stood at the kitchen island at five in the afternoon with flour on his nose.
He was making the tart.
The crust was golden.
The filling was set.
He no longer needed Pip to tell him when it was done.
"You're humming," said Pip from the stool.
"I'm not."
"You're humming the little one. The one from the lullaby."
Oren kept his eyes on the crust.
"I don't know any lullabies."
"You made it up." Pip grinned, chipped tooth and all. "It's got a lemon in it."
