Chapter 14: The Loft
Eirik did not say a word to either of us.
He stood in the church doorway for a count of ten, swaying, and then he turned and walked back out into the rain.
Lasse did not go after him.
He walked me home through the dark with the ribbon still pinned to my coat.
Neither of us said anything until we reached the foot of Pine Street.
"Come up to the smokehouse," he said.
He said it flatly, not as a question.
I stopped under a streetlight and looked at him.
"I thought you wanted to deserve it."
"I've been trying for three weeks," Lasse said. "I'm no good at it."
The room above the smokehouse was one long attic under the rafters, with a mattress on the floor and a woodstove in the corner.
He lit the stove and did not turn on the lamp.
Rain ran down the window over the harbor.
I stood in the middle of the floor with my wet coat in my hands.
He took it from me and hung it on a nail, ribbon and all.
