Lasse's POV

I pulled on my jeans and went down the stairs in the dark.

Behind me, Sunny sat up on the mattress with the quilt held to her chest.

"Stay there," I said. "I know who it is."

I opened the door, and Eirik Lindholm sat on the smokehouse step in the rain with his elbows on his knees.

He was soaked.

His eyes were red, and he had been crying for some time.

"I didn't know where else," he said.

"There are a lot of other places."

"Not any that would let me in."

I should have shut the door.

I stood there with the rain blowing in and my whole body still humming.

I had once helped this man carry a hundred-pound sack of salt up Hill Street.

"Sit on the stool by the stove," I said.

I gave him a cup of coffee.

He held it in both hands.

"She's up there," he said, tilting his head at the ceiling. "Sunny."

"She is."
