Chapter 17: Gift of Eirik Lindholm
Five hundred people came to the Fire Department benefit, which was more than the Fire Hall could seat.
They stood along the cinderblock walls and sat on the running boards of the engines.
At table nine, by the doors, sat eight harbor families, the nets man, Lasse in a clean flannel, and Brynja, with a plate in front of her and her hands folded on it.
I sat between Lasse and the nets man's daughter-in-law.
She had put on lipstick.
The auction went the way it went every year.
A quilt sold for six hundred dollars.
A week at the Lodge sold for nine.
Birgit's pie went to Torvald for two hundred, and everybody applauded politely.
At eight, the fire board woman rose and tapped a glass.
"Our Chief has a few words about this year's big purchase," she said. "Chief."
Eirik walked to the front in his dress blues.
He was sober and shaved and his hair was combed, and the room stood up for him.
