Chapter 20: Fifty Thousand
The Harbor Diner at noon on a Friday held thirty people, and I had never seen it so quiet.

Lasse had offered to come.
I had told him no, because this one was mine.
Torvald sat in the corner booth under the framed photograph of the 1987 lake trout derby, with a cup of coffee and a slice of pie he was not eating.
His quilted vest was buttoned to the neck.
Birgit was not with him.
I slid into the opposite seat.
The waitress came with the pot and then thought better of it and went away again.
"Sunniva," he said. "Thank you for coming. I wanted to do this civilly."
"I'm civil."
"You've had a hard month. We all have." He turned his cup a quarter turn on the saucer. "I want you to know that nothing has been personal."
