Chapter 24: The Long Table
On the Saturday of Labor Day weekend, a year to the day after the rehearsal dinner, the harbor table had three hundred places.
Lasse and the harbor men had built it over two days.
It was forty-one sections of planks laid end to end along the pier on my father's sawhorses.
Nobody had applied for a permit.
Nobody had needed to.
The new mayor, the retired schoolteacher in the red hat, had come down on Thursday with a clipboard.
She asked where she should put the ribbon.
"What ribbon?" I'd said.
"The one that opens a thing," she said. "The council would like to cut it."
I told her there was nothing to cut.
She'd looked disappointed, and then she carried a case of paper plates to the end of the pier.
At four o'clock I stood on the planks in my green sundress with my braid down my back.
The sun was going down over the water, flat and silver.
