Chapter 21: The Banquet
Kyla had named the place for her threat herself, in her bedroom, with her leg in a brace.
The whole banquet.
The Wright Valley athletic banquet was held on the second Thursday after Regionals, in the student union ballroom.
It had round tables, a stage, and a screen the size of a barn door.
Four hundred people filled it.
There were athletes in jackets, coaches in ties, trustees, parents, and the athletic director at the long head table with a gavel he never used.
My father wore his one tie again.
He sat beside me with his napkin tucked in his collar, staring at the chicken as though it owed him money.
"It's dry," he whispered.
"Eat it anyway."
"I'm eating it politely."
Donal sat on my other side and said nothing.
His thigh pressed warm against mine under the cloth, steady as a hand on a rail.
Bea had left us before the salads.
She was on the banquet committee, and the committee ran the year-in-review reel.
