Chapter 8: No Touching

It was two miles to the house, and I walked every one of them.

Rhett rolled the Road King along behind me at walking speed with the headlight on my back.

He didn't say a word the whole way.

When I turned in at the drive, he cut the engine, and the silence came down on us both.

I went into the garage because the side door was closer.

I heard his boots on the concrete behind me.

"You said that to hurt me," Rhett said.

I turned around.

"You stopped at the overlook to kiss me," I said. "Two days ago you stood on a dock and told two hundred people you were finished with me."

"I know what I said."

"And now you want to kiss me with her name still in your mouth?"

"I wasn't thinking about her."

"You think about her every minute."

"No," he said. "That's the problem. Right now I'm thinking about you."

He crossed the garage in three steps.

I should have moved away, and I put my back against the workbench instead.

His hands came down on either side of me, flat on the wood, and he didn't touch me.

He was breathing hard.

"Say it," I said. "The rule."

"No touching."

"Then back up."

"Tell me you want me to," Rhett said.

I wanted to say a thousand cold things.

What I said was, "You're the one who made it a rule."

"I was the one who made a lot of bad calls this week," he said, hoarse.

I grabbed his vest with both hands and dragged his mouth down onto mine.

He made a sound low in his chest and then he stopped holding back.

He kissed me hard and deep, with his hand fisted in my braid and the other one gripping my hip.
