Chapter 9: The Receipt
I pushed him off me.
He stepped back and pulled his jeans up, and I slid down from the bench with my knees not working.
I found my shirt on the floor and put it on inside out.
"What money?" I said.
"Don't."
"What money, Rhett?"
"The four hundred thousand," he said. "Don't stand in my garage with my come still on your thighs and act like you don't know."
I took one step and slapped him.
It cracked across the concrete.
He didn't touch his face.
"Say that again," I said.
"I'm sorry."
"No. Say what you think I did."
He took his phone out of his vest pocket and thumbed it on with a hand that wasn't quite steady.
"Morton took a picture of it before he locked it in the office safe," Rhett said.
He held the screen out.
It was a printed receipt on club letterhead.
Received from the Black Pine Riders Motorcycle Club, four hundred thousand dollars, in full settlement of all claims arising from the marriage.
Under that, in blue ink, was a signature that said Rhona Kincaid.
Under the signature was a second slip of lined paper.
Tell Rhett I'm gone. Don't look for me. I'm sorry it had to end like this.
I read both twice.
"That isn't my handwriting," I said.
"It's your name."
"It's a cursive signature. I haven't signed in cursive since the fourth grade. Go look at the marriage license. Go look at the books I keep for Mae."
"I did."
"And?"
"It was a signature on a receipt, and you'd just been given four hundred thousand dollars," Rhett said. "People change how they write when they're scared."
