Chapter 4: Church Night

The Iron Pines held church on Friday nights, and the wives came too.

That was Dutch's rule, and he was proud of it.

Forty people crowded the clubhouse on Mill Spur Road, the men at the long table in their vests and the women along the wall with plates and paper cups.

I pushed the door open at eight o'clock with the thirty-day notice in my fist.

The jukebox was playing something slow.

It stopped when Dutch's wife turned and saw me, and she reached over and unplugged it herself.

Every head swung my way.

I had stitched about half the leather in that room.

Rhett sat at the long table with a beer.

He saw me, and his shoulders came down in a slow, tired way.

Dutch sat at the head of the table with his glasses on his chest.

Delaney was in the corner chair by the pool table with a cardigan pulled around her, and Dutch's hand was resting on the back of her chair.

Someone had given her a glass of water.

Dutch had carried it over for her.

I stopped in the middle of the floor.

"Evening, Hallie," Dutch said, mildly. "This is a members' night. We can sit down tomorrow."

"I'm not here for tomorrow."

"Honey."

"I'm here because you served me a lease notice."

I held it up and let it hang from my hand.

"I'm here because every one of you has known for five months that my husband was sleeping at Delaney's house, and not one of you said a word to me."

Somebody put a cup down very quietly.

"On Tuesday morning," I said, "at 4:58, her porch light came on."

Rhett stood up.

"Hal."

"At five minutes past, my husband walked out of her front door with his vest over his bare chest."
