Chapter 7: Delaney at Midnight

I opened the door and let her in because I was too tired to do anything else.

Delaney came in sideways, with her shoulders hunched.

She stood on the mat and dripped on it.

She looked smaller than she had at the clubhouse.

She looked like the girl who had sat at my kitchen table last spring doing our taxes with a pencil behind her ear, saying, "You two are the only couple I know who actually like each other."

I locked the door behind her.

"You've got about ten minutes," I said. "Sit."

She sat on the customer's stool and wrapped both hands around her elbows.

"I'm sorry," Delaney said.

I waited.

"I know that's the worst thing I could say. I know it's nothing. I'm saying it anyway." Her chin shook. "I'm so sorry, Hallie."

"For what part?"

"All of it."

"Tell me the part with my shirt."

She flinched.

I had meant her to.

"Rhett put it on me," she said. "I didn't want it. It was in the hamper in my bathroom, and he said, 'Put this on.' He said it would look real."

I held very still.

"Look real to who?"

Her mouth opened.

I watched her catch herself.

I watched the words go back down, and something close to terror came up in their place.

"I can't," she whispered. "I can't say it here."

"Delaney."

"I was going to tell you on Sunday. If I'm still around on Sunday." She wiped her face with the heel of her hand. "I can't do it tonight. He'll know I came."
