Chapter 10: The Too-Short Couch

The car took Bartek to Karlov Avenue and waited at the curb until he was through the street door.

He climbed three flights in his rented shoes, which had been tormenting him since nine.

He let himself into the dark flat and sat down on the couch with a groan.

Zosia's door was shut.

He took off the shoes and set them side by side and put his head in his hands.

At two in the morning the buzzer sounded.

It was long and unhurried, one press, and it went through the sleeping flat.

Bartek was on his feet before he knew it.

He pressed the intercom.

"Yes?"

"It's me," said Ingmar's voice, from the street, with nothing at all in it.

Bartek buzzed him in.

He stood at the open door and listened to the stairs, slow and heavy, three flights.

When Ingmar reached the landing he was still in the black tie and the tailored coat, with his shirt collar open and his face closed.

Snow had melted on his shoulders.

"I could not be in the house," he said.

Bartek stepped back to let him in.

"I'm sorry," Ingmar said. "It is late. I should not have come."

"Shut up and come in."

At the end of the hall Zosia's door opened.

She stood in it in a robe with Cubs logos, her red hair standing straight up.
