Chapter 14: What You Took
"Win," Bartek said. "You'd like to win."
He stood up out of the leather chair, and Ingmar rose with him, and they faced each other across the Persian rug.
"You let me sit in your office for two months," Bartek said. "You let me flinch at every memo."
"Yes," Ingmar said.
"You let me cry in a stairwell on a Tuesday."
"I did not know you did," Ingmar said.
"Because you weren't looking, you were busy being a villain." His voice cracked. "Do you know what that does? Do you know what it is to think the person you."
He stopped.
His hands were shaking, so he made fists.
Ingmar didn't speak.
He stood with his arms at his sides and his face open, and he took it, and the quiet made Bartek angrier.
"Say something. Argue with me."
"No," Ingmar said.
"You're a coward."
"I am," Ingmar said. "Often."
Bartek shoved him.
It was a flat palm against the chest, the first time he had ever laid a hand on him in anger.
Ingmar rocked back a step and caught the desk.
Bartek stared at his own hand.
"Again," Ingmar said.
"What?" Bartek said.
"If you need to. Again."
"I don't want to hit you," Bartek said.
"Then what do you want?"
"I want." Bartek's breath hitched. "I want you to say you're sorry and mean it."
"I am sorry."
"I want you to say what it cost you."
Ingmar's face changed.
For the first time since the car, something flashed across it, hot and bitter and entirely human.
"You want to know what it cost," he said. "Shall I tell you?"
"Yes," Bartek said.
"You took her money."
Bartek recoiled.
"You took her money," Ingmar said, low and shaking. "You sat in my office with her envelope in your locker. You let me touch you. You let me hold you, and tie you, and put my hands in your hair, and say your name. And every night I thought, he will go home and write it down."
