Chapter 10: The Drawer

Rochelle's POV

When Elias finished, I was sitting upright on the couch with the blanket in both fists.

"He said I asked him to say it kindly?"

"Those were his words."

"I never asked him anything." My voice cracked and I made it steady. "I sat in the front pew. I didn't know you were there."

"I know that now."

"I looked at the doors."

"Twice," Elias said. "I saw you."

For a moment neither of us spoke.

I thought of the reception afterward, in the church hall, with a table of sandwiches nobody ate.

Chad had left for twenty minutes to "take a call."

He'd come back with wet shoulders and his hand on my back, and I had thought what a good husband he was, to go out into the rain for work on such a day.

I thought of the night in the hospital, when I'd called Alasdair from the hallway with my mother's pulse still going on the monitor behind me.

It had rung to a message that said the number was not in service.

Chad had taken my phone to "fix a glitch" the week before and handed it back.

He'd said, so you won't get hurt by his voicemail.

"He gave me a dead number," I said. "He took my brother out of my phone and told me to be glad."

"Rochelle."

"Alasdair has been trying for six years."

"He hasn't told me all of it yet," Elias said carefully. "He wants to see it before he says it to you. But yes. I think he was."

I stood up. The blanket slid to the floor.

"Where's the proof?"

"We find it."

"Chad's office has a drawer," I said. "The bottom left, in the desk. It's always locked. He said it was tax things and I wasn't to touch it, because I'd lose the papers."
