Chapter 13: Seven Days

The knock came before the sun was fully up, three flat raps on the penthouse door.

I was still in Elias's bed with the accountant's email open on my phone and his arm across my ribs.

Elias was on his feet before I had sat up.

"Stay here," he said, pulling on his sweatpants.

"It's my mess."

"Then put on a shirt."

I took the white T-shirt off the floor and put it on, and I stood a second with my nose in the collar.

It smelled like him.

Then I followed him into the hall.

Alasdair was at the door in yesterday's shirt, with the lawyer who had stayed all night sitting behind him at the dining table.

Two officers waited in the corridor, a sergeant and a younger man who kept his eyes on the carpet.

"Mr. Holloway," the sergeant said. "We have a complaint from Chad Lyle. He says a box of his company's financial records was taken from his office yesterday. He wants it returned."

"Come in," Alasdair said. "Rochelle, will you bring the box?"

The shoebox sat on the table where I had left it at ten, tied again with its kitchen string.

The sergeant looked at the box, at the lawyer, and at me in a man's T-shirt with bare legs.

He decided not to mention it.

"I represent Ms. Holloway and Mr. Holloway," the lawyer said, and slid a folder across the wood. "Mr. Lyle told you those records belong to his company. Please read the top of page one."

The sergeant opened it.

"Account holder, Rochelle A. Holloway." He turned a page. "Seventy-two deposits from Holloway Freight."
