Chapter 20: The Screens
The microphone was warm from Chad's hand.
Three hundred people looked up at me, and for a moment I could hear the air vents.
"Good evening," I said. "I'm Rochelle Holloway. Until two weeks ago I was Chad's wife, and I made dinner for forty people at his last anniversary party."
Chad stepped toward me.
"Rochelle, give me that."
"You'll want to sit down for this," I said. "Several of your guests already have."
I looked past him to the back of the room, where Elias stood at the sound table with a laptop.
I nodded once.
The big screens on both walls went dark, and then they lit.
The first thing on them was my backyard, from the seat of the woman in the green coat.
I didn't turn to watch. I knew every frame of it by now.
I watched the room instead.
I watched a man in the second row lean forward when Arlene's lips made the word, and the woman beside him cover her mouth.
I watched the text appear beside my plate.
"Keep crying. She's folding. Two more months and I'm rid of her."
The ballroom made a low noise, the sound of three hundred people drawing the same conclusion.
Arlene was frozen at the edge of the stage, and Chad had gone white to the lips.
"That's old," he said, not into any microphone. "It's been circulated."
"It hasn't been circulated here," I said. "There's more."
The screen changed.
It was a lawn in daylight, with a porch, a moving truck and a piano wrapped in blankets.
